After an enjoyable pre-reunion evening on Friday 4th July, held at the Crown, Eaton Socon, the main 2008 Summer
Reunion of the RAF Tempsford Veterans and Relatives Association, met up at the Airfield on what appeared to be a
wet and windy Saturday 5th July 2008.
During the formal speech, given by Edwin Bryce, it was remembered that 5th July was the anniversary of the 161 Squadron
flight of Hudson FK790, piloted by Flt. Lt. Ian Menzies, that failed to return in 1944 from a mission over the
Netherlands. Bob Body, (nephew of the pilot) was present at the reunion. Other flights were remembered and greetings from
those not able to be present. Then, to his great surprise, a presentation was made by Harold Watson to Ken Tattersall (former RAF Tempsford
Halifax pilot) of a bound 3 volume set of the records of his wartime Tempsford operations (as researched and compiled by Bob Body).
Ken then recounted a few humorous stories of some of his exploits during those times.
The weather brightened up considerably by the time of the Church service in St. Peters' Church, Tempsford, where the church bells
were specially rung. The organist (Dr. Roy Tipping) and the choir of Blunham Church provided and led the music during the service. Passages were read by Harold Watson (veteran) and
Steve Harris. Also, two sisters, Susan Zajfen and Jill Bailey (whose father, the late Sqn Ldr H.M. Bailey flew on missions from RAF Tempsford), read 2 poems and a brief log entry
from their father's flying records from those times. The service was officiated by the Revd Barbara Ebeling, who also was in for a
surprise, as knowing it was to be her last Tempsford Reunion Service as Vicar of Tempsford, the TVAR "hi-jacked" the end
of the service, in order for her to be presented with a plaque (see top picture) and flowers, in grateful thanks for all
the services she had conducted for the TVAR.
After the service, everyone repaired to the "Wheatsheaf" Tempsford, for a buffet lunch and time to have a great social time together.
